ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The department was established in 1955 and has since offered programs/courses in B.A., B.A. Hons Pass Course in Geography, M.Sc. (Geography). Presently all the courses are following the semester system. There are 6 Sanctioned posts for teaching in the department. The department is headed by an Associate Professor and 4 Guest Teachers are also working in the department. The support staff includes 1 SLA against the 2 Sanctioned posts (1 SLA and 1 JLA). The department regularly organizes extension lectures for the students and also encourages students to participate in geography quiz competitions regularly organized with the help of the  Association of Punjab Geographers. The department has good infrastructural facilities, like 2 laboratories equipped with surveying instruments, remote sensing images a good collection of maps and models, 1 Classroom with an ICT facility, and internet facilities for staff and students.

The Strength of the department is its dedicated and competent faculty, working hard under the inspiring leadership of the College Principal, working towards good academic performance of the students in the College and University exams. Good infrastructure, learning resources well-stocked library, e-learning resources, well-equipped labs, etc. Some weaknesses and deficiencies that hinder the department’s ability to accomplish its goals are a skewed teacher-taught ratio and difficulty in reaching out to a very diverse student community. At the same time, there are Opportunities for improvement and innovations in the teaching-learning process by organizing a greater number of seminars, guest lectures, student seminars, presentations by students, etc. The Challenges are in having greater interaction with local/global industry to improve chances of placement and to encourage students to research at the undergraduate level. Our Future Plans include starting PG Diploma in Remote Sensing; to set up a Smart Classroom.
